GENERAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH EXPENDITURES PER CAPITA

Germany spends a lot money on health per capita, but other countries achieve better triatable mortality with less.

  • Germany is among the countries which spend the most financial resources on healthcare in the European Union (EU) and even worldwide. In 2019 Germany has spent 11,7% of its GDP on healthcare. The average percentage of GDP spent on healthcare was 8,3% back in 2019.

  • Germany spends a lot of money on health per person and achieves good overall health outcomes. However, health spending in other western European countries provides better value for money.

  • The figure above shows that 14 countries had lower avoidable mortality rates and had spent less money on healthcare. However, none of those countries are from the V4.

  • The best performer according to the criterion of avoidable mortality is Czechia, which spends more than 2600 euro per person and the number of treatable deaths per 100 000 people is around 122. The second-best performer based on the treatable mortality rate is Poland, with less than 140 deaths per 100 000 people.

  • An important fact is also that Poland is performing better than Slovakia and Hungary despite spending less of their GDP on healthcare. In Slovakia there are almost 170 treatable deaths per 100 000 people and the situation is ever worse in Hungary with almost 180 treatable deaths per 100 000 people.

  • The EU counts just four countries which have more treatable deaths per 100 000 people compared to Hungary. Namely Lithuania, Bulgaria, Latvia and Romania.
